In hindsight, perhaps getting her a book would have been more practical… And less embarrassing.
When someone Seth cared about was sad- in this instance, a friend- his first instinct was always to go get them something that could make them smile, and then spend the night cuddling them and watching movies and singing. But Crimson was extra sad and it upset him to think that he couldn’t do much to help. Actually, he partially blamed himself- he had, after all, persuaded them to form the band again for a tour even after they split. If it weren’t for him, the two of them would probably be at home, in Maine, hanging out all happy-go-lucky. But because he’d persuaded her to come on, and because of that, she’d been forced to succumb to whatever drama was happening around tour. He didn’t even think he knew the half of it, in all honesty. He was just… Sad for her sadness.
So, of course, his instinct had been to go down to one of California’s largest malls, which was conveniently nearby the tour site, and walked around awhile. His first thought had been Victoria’s Secret, because what girl didn’t visit that, right? But he quickly wrote that off. After all, hadn’t sex been one of the issues that had gotten everyone where they were in the first place? That, and… It probably would have been awkward. Seth and Crimson were not romantically involved, not even sexually, so… Maybe not. His next gander had been in one of those clothing stores he knew she liked, but… No, that would only lead to something bad.
And then he’d stumbled upon a Kay Jewelers and he thought, hey, a necklace! What could go wrong there? Well, a lot, apparently. The employees of the shop were no doubt annoyed by the fact that, for an entire hour, Seth had been gendering at their same selection of bracelets and necklaces with no move to get any of them at all. He’d thought that jewelry would be fool proof, he really did. What could go wrong with that? Well, apparently, a lot. Forty five minutes after the beginning of his browse-fest, he realized that there was a very fine line between “here’s a bracelet for your troubles, best friend” and “let’s hop into bed together and have a romantic night of sexual intercourse and wine”. He’d meant for it to be the former but boy. Everything looked (and cost) as though it fit the latter. Damn.
But he also realized, somewhere down the line, that if he got up and walked out now without buying anything he’d probably piss the employees off to no end, due to his excessive loitering. He was now in an obnoxious situation and he needed someone’s help. Damn.

By just looking at Kyra in her everyday life, it would seem pretty obvious that she liked to shop. And if you knew her on a more personal level, you’d know that it was a borderline addiction. A therapist would probably tell you that it was from growing up with parents who thought throwing money at Kyra and her twin sufficed as affection. Mr. Evans decided to take an interest in younger, less intelligent females after he divorced the twins mom. And instead of raising them properly as their primary guardian, he let them do what they wanted and paid for it. Of course it was all to him in their good regards and not ask to move in with their mother-- who also threw money at them, but to tell her all about their fathers new relationship and be absolutely unbearable to whoever the new woman in his life was. Money meant a lot of things to Kyra, none of them healthy.
Armed with almost more bags she could carry and her dads credit card tucked in her wallet, Kyra decided to call it a day, get some food and get the heck back to the tour site. She had done pretty well for herself, hitting up Neiman Marcus, Victoria Secret, MAC make-up and, of course, her favorite Tiffany and Co. The amount she had charged wouldn’t be enough to garner a phone call from her father-- but when Kira saw all the bags, she’d definitely have some questions for her twin. Obviously something was bothering her. Even though it was the same Abner problems and worrying about Adonis.
Kay Jewelers. Cute. Not usually Kyra’s style and she did already purchase a Tiffany’s bangle bracelet. Had she not spied a very familiar figure, she would have walked straight past it without a second thought. “Seth?” What in the heavens was Seth Hall doing in a jewelry store. And one that’s known for romantic jewelry at that. Well, looks like she’d have to investigate.
She could see the interest of the salesgirls when she walked in. From previous experience she knew what they were thinking. Boss body, semi-skanky outfit, boots and bags from expensive stores-- they probably thought she was a stripper spending her cash. Before they could fake smile at her and try to get her to spend her money, she walked up to Seth and gave him a loud kiss on the cheek. “If you’re looking for a watch, I can suggest a more appropriate store.”

Seth felt trapped. It wasn’t as though he couldn’t just walk out- there was nothing stopping him from bidding everyone a good day and walking out and pissing everyone off. The looks on their faces would probably be humorous, had he the balls to turn around and check. But honestly, he didn’t like being a burden like that. He’d worked in retail back in college and he knew how obnoxious it was to have customers come in and spend so much time only to opt out of buying it. He didn’t want to be that guy that made their days worse, he really didn’t. He was too nice for that. But how was he going to get out of this situation without busting his wallet on something he wouldn’t have anyone to give it to.
But like a blessing, a familiar voice called his name and before he knew it, a beautiful woman was kissing his cheek and mentioning something about a watch, which he immediately dismissed. The interests of the employees piqued and Seth beamed, picking his head up. He wasn’t the most clever guy in the world but an idea struck him so with a bright grin, he exclaimed, ”Honey! There you are.” He wrapped his arms around her, then, pulling her into a tight embrace. While he did hug Kyra a fair amount, he was sure his sudden behavior was startling (due to the fact that he wasn’t letting go) but he didn’t bother to remedy it. His lips found her ear and he dropped his tone to a whisper. ”Okay. I need you to pretend we’re engaged and looking for a ring and you don’t like the prices here, so we have to go look elsewhere,” he whispered, figuring she’d be okay with it.
And if not? Well, she wasn’t. No big deal.
Seth adored Kyra. She was gorgeous and crazy talented and although he hadn’t known her for very long, he already dreaded the day he’d have to say goodbye. The rest of the tour was going to no doubt be a blast with her around because, hell. She was awesome. And he knew that out of the people who’d help him out of stupid situations, she’d be amongst them.
He pulled back, the smile on his face still as bright as possible with one arm still wound tight around her. Seth straightened up to address the employees. ”She was off shopping- you know, girl stuff. Although she knows I’d love ‘er in sweatpants, the silly goose.” He wrinkled his nose up, knowing his tone was pretty damn corny but be damned with it. ”So! Darling, see anything you like?” He winked. He’d have to buy her ice cream later, surely.

Kyra kept from having an obvious reaction to the way Seth was acting towards her. It wasn’t him calling her honey or the lingering hug that he had given her. That was no big deal. Seth was a sweet guy and Kyra wasn’t worried in the slightest about his intentions. It was the line he about waiting for her that confused her. Luckily for him, being an Evans Twin and the daughter of their father she was good at jumping in to situations and playing it off by being vague until she had a better grasp of the situation. “Sorry to keep you waiting,” she leaned against him while his arms were still around her. What she figured was that one of these salesgirls were hitting on him. Which wouldn’t be to bad if the over forty thing was your cup of tea. And, of course, if you were in to shoulder pads, too. Pretending to be with someone was easy, but being that Kyra was currently involved with someone she’d have some restrictions. It wasn’t impossible, but it could be harder to sell with limited options of physical affection.
She hadn’t been expecting him to tell her what was going on right then and there, being that whispering usually conjured up suspicion. And Seth’s request did little to make the situation make sense. In fact, now Kyra had far more questions than she initially had coming in here. Engagement rings? What the hell was Seth Hall doing in Kay’s looking for engagement rings? As far as she knew, he wasn’t seeing anyone. But even if he was, if she was engagement ring important-- why didn’t she hear about this mystery lady? And if he wanted her opinion on rights, why didn’t he just ask? Or if he wasn’t satisfied with what he saw or the prices, why not just leave? Oh, he was surely going to get the Twenty Q’s later from Kyra.
Her lips curled in a smile when he made the sweatpants comment and called her a silly goose. “Isn’t he the sweetest?” Kyra wrinkled her nose cutely at him for a moment and then visibly brightened when he asked her if she saw anything she liked. “Well, Pookie-- I didn’t really get to look!” Without glancing over, Kyra shoved her bags in the direction of one of the salesgirls that came around the corner like a vulture. “Keep your eye on that, will you?”
Clasping her hands together she walked towards the display glass with an excited grin, “Okay, I’m going to need to see your signature collection and your three stones.” Looking over her shoulder she studied the look on Seth’s face and then blew him an air kiss, “Well c’mon over here and lets take a look!” She looked back over at the salesgirl and playfully rolled her eyes, “He’s a manager for one of the bands that are performing in town tomorrow, super busy all the time. Just hands me the card and lets me wander about so I don’t annoy him.”
“OH!” The salesgirl had taken out a hideous display rack and Kyra shook her head, “Sorry, I should be more specific. Platinum and white gold only. I’d feel like I’m going to a Pimp & Ho Ball if I wore actual gold. And nothing from the clearance rack-- if nobody else wanted it, I sure in the hell don’t. Right, Pookie?”

Seth was confident that this was his ticket out of this store. Kyra would take a quick look, say she didn’t like anything, and they’d be out of there and he wouldn’t look like such a dick. The smile on his face, although designed to make him look like a man in love, lent to the fact that he was just so excited to leave. But right as he prepared to steer her right out of the store, she shot a ‘Pookie’ at him and started to actually look. Uh oh. His brow furrowed and he pocketed his hands, observing her as she shoved her shopping bags elsewhere and asked for some sort of collection. He knew that she’d never make him purchase her jewelry but this honestly wasn’t part of the plan- perhaps she wasn’t the perfect person to get him out of the store, after all.
He wasn’t a man who knew an abundance about jewelry. He knew enough to get by- small diamonds were cheap, big diamonds were (usually) trashy- but not the specifics. When buying something for a girl, he used his knowledge of their personality to get him through, which usually worked. Tennis bracelets and lockets were wonderful for a noncommittal gift, when he wanted to show that he cared. It all had worked wonderful for him- he prided himself in his methodic ways. But when thrust into a situation with someone who knew the ins and outs of all types of accessories, he felt pretty stupid. Honestly, he just went with what looked pretty. But there was so much more to jewelry, he supposed, and Kyra? She seemed to know a fair amount.
Darn.
But he was roped into things, now- a game of pretend, which he usually didn’t mind, in a jewelry store. He was just glad that Kyra wasn’t a huge musician yet, because being spotted probably wouldn’t be the greatest, especially since she was in a relationship with Adonis and Seth was… Well, Seth. He straightened up and put a smile on his face, walking over to Kyra and slipping an arm around her middle. ”Oh, Ky-Bear, you can never annoy me,” he quipped, ”But I’d hate for you to get bored now, wouldn’t I?” He glanced down at the rings Kyra was shooing away, resisting a chuckle. Goodness. ”Nothing but the best for my girl. Of course.” He smiled. He really just wanted to get out of there.
”Now Ky-Bear, keep in mind that we can go look other places too, alright? Just browsing right now, we don’t need to make our final decisions today,” he prompted, giving her side a subtle squeeze to prove his point. ”And I need to get back to the band here, soon, to make sure practice is running smoothly. So just keep that in mind, Sweetheart.” A sigh. They were going to be there forever.
